The word "Qawwali" is derived from the Arabic word "Qaol"
which means "axiom" or "dictum". Qawwali is a form of
Sufi devotional music popular in the Indian
subcontinent. It is a vibrant musical tradition that
stretches back more than 700 years. The roots of Qawwali
can be traced back from 8th century in Persia (today's
Iran and Afghanistan). During the first major migration
from Persia, in the 11th century, the musical tradition
of Sema migrated to the Indian subcontinent, Turkey and
Uzbekistan.
Amir Khusro Dehelvi of the Chisti order of Sufis is
credited with fusing the Persian and South Asian musical
traditions to create Qawwali as we know it today in the
late 13th century in India (Hindustani classical music
is also attributed to him). Hazarat Amir Khusro trained
12 (twelve) children for performing qawwalies ,these
children are known as "Qawwal Bachche" and the families
associated with these Qawwal Bachche are known as
"Qawwal Bachchon Ka Gharana" (The house hold of Qawwal
Bachche).
Mian Samad Bin Ibrahim was the first pupil of Hazrat
Ameer Khusro and the Group Leader of the team, formed by
Hazrat Ameer Khusro called "Qawwal Bachoon Ka Gharana".
Ustad Tan Ras Khan Sahab (founder of Delhi Gharana) who
was a teacher of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah
Zafar , is direct descendant of ".Amir Khusro’s
principal disciple Mian Samad Bin Ibrahim.
Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami is the most senior amongst the
descendents (4th Generation) of Tan Ras Khan Sahib
belongs to this well known Qawwal Bachchon Ka Gharana as
well as "Delhi Gharana". His family has been singing
Qawwalis for past eight centuries. Khusro's tradition
has passed unbroken across seven centuries and thirty
generations. Ustad Meraj Ahmed 'Nizami', current head of
the Qawwal Bachche as well as Delhi Gharana, still sings in Delhi.
Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami is well versed and can perform
in several languages such as Arebic, Persian, Hindi,
Urdu, etc. Ustad Meraj Nizami has total mastery over
various genres of classical music, such as Dhrupad,
Khayal, Tarana, Thumri and Dadra, which he blends
beautifully during his performances of Qawwali.
Ustad Meraj Ahmad Nizami started his training in
classical music at a tender age under the rigorous and
critical tutelage of his late father, Ustad Yaqub Ali
Khan (Piarey Khan Sahib). Regula Burckhardt Qureshi
wrote a book about sufi music "Sufi Music of India and
Pakistan" Sound, context and meaning in Qawwali.
Although she had number of informants , Qureshi
dedicates much of her presentation to the one Musician :
Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami.
